THE GODFATHER (R18+)               175 mins

Francis Ford Coppola’s epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola paints a chilling portrait of the Sicilian clan's rise and near fall from power in America, masterfully balancing the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award nominations, and won three including Best Picture and Best Actor of 1972.

NEW EXHIBITION FOR 2010:

SHOW STOPPERS!

Lights up on a fabulous array of facts and artifacts from the wonderful world of show business.

Image: The Girl Behind the Counter, Perth Operatic and choral Society, His Majesty’s Theatre 1921

We invite you to wile away the best part of an hour - and it will be the best - Surrounded by fascinating artifacts taken from the overflowing shelves in our backstage storerooms.

Take a look at silk programmes from Dame Nellie Melba’s gala performances at Covent Garden, see our very own collection of Beatles photos, view 19th Century costume designs, study the painted portraits of Neville Teede and Dame Maggie Smith, read a note from Richard Brinsley Sheridan (entangled in Vivien Leigh’s feather boa), inspect movie posters not sighted since 1933 and peruse a collection of marionettes from Nutshell Puppet Theatre in 1973.

And when you’ve done all that feast your eyes on the glamorous outfit Janet Holmes à Court wore to the New York opening of Miss Saigon.

Just this once we’re ignoring that old showbiz adage, “always leave them wanting more”, because with SHOW STOPPERS, you’ll get more than you bargained for.

The Westend Festival

The Westend Festival has been designed to promote the business community, social and cultural activities in the precinct bounded by William and Thomas Street and Kings Park and the railway line. Drawing on the increased vibrancy of the west end of the city, we have created a Festival that celebrates the west end as a great place to work, live and play. It’s our need to demonstrate this to a wider section of the community.

The “west end” is synonymous with style, shopping, cosmopolitan living and the arts in cities such as London and New York. We are fortunate to have the early foundations of a similar formula here in Perth; King Street fashion district, His Majesty’s Theatre, trendy restaurants and bars, art galleries, dance studios, hotels, book stores, architectural firms, heritage buildings, inner city apartments, a convention centre and corporate offices.

The popularity and success of the 2009 Westend Festival demonstrates the attractiveness and vibrancy of this precinct to the Perth community, the Festival has been growing steadily since the Festival began in 2004. I encourage the community to visit the west end and take enjoyment of this years Festival in 2010.

Westend Festival Chairman

Rocco Macri
